God Desires to Use You
Prayer 365 // Instrument of Purpose (Day 1)
More from this week:
Today's Scripture:
"The word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” “Alas, Sovereign LORD,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.” But the LORD said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the LORD. Then the LORD reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.” - Jeremiah 1:4-10 NIV
Today's Devotional:
Our goal in this week of devotion and prayer is to help you embrace your identity as an instrument of purpose so that you can effectively flow in the rhythms of grace. So all week long we will build on this truth: You are an instrument of purpose! I want you to say that aloud, say “I am an instrument of purpose.” Everything about you was designed by God with a specific purpose in mind. From the way you talk to the way you walk, from the place you were born to the place you currently live, from the way that you dream to the way that you see… God created you with a purpose, and you are valuable. You were not made by mistake, but created with intention for a specific purpose and a specific calling.
So yes, it’s true, you were created to be used by God to carry out His perfect will in the earth. So not only are you an instrument of purpose but more importantly, I want you to know that God desires to use you. I know this may seem odd or foreign to you, but He does. You were created with an intent to play a significant part in His perfect song, a part that no one else can play like you.
Knowing this, there are three truths I want you to hold onto:
1. You are on assignment. You have no time to waste! Don't get caught up in binge watching Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime! Your purpose is too great to get caught up in that lifestyle. Other's may do it but that's not for you. You're on assignment, and actually they are too, they just don't know it yet.
2. Don’t compare yourself to others. Don't look at other people comparing their abilities with yours. A symphony is filled with many different instruments, each with their own purpose. Don't focus on what God is doing through them, focus on what He desires to do through you. Don't compare because comparison kills the creativity of God.
3. Don’t cross contaminate. As an instrument, you have a mouthpiece that God uses to breathe into in order to create a sound. Your mouth was created to bring God glory, therefore, do not allow others to use your mouthpiece as this causes cross contamination.
Just in case you’re having trouble seeing the idea of being an instrument, perhaps you can’t see why God would want to use you. I want you to know that Jeremiah was not the only person identified as an instrument, we see this Acts 9:15 when Jesus is speaking with Ananias about Saul, who we know as Apostle Paul, who was recently converted after an encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. Ananias basically says, “God you're trippin'… He’s been killing Christians!” Jesus's response to him was “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel.” Yes, God used a person with a destructive record like Saul’s, cleaned him up and used him as an instrument of purpose. The instrument that was once used by Satan to kill and imprison Christians was cleaned by Jesus and used to reach the gentiles (those considered unclean) and to write half of the New Testament.
Prayer Focus: That you would embrace the truth that God desires to use you.
