Who's King in Your Life
Don't Get it Twisted (Day 2) // Prayer365
“So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” - Romans 5:21 NLT
“So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.” - James 4:7-10 NLT
We’re on day two of the theme titled “Don’t Get it Twisted!” I want you to declare aloud, “Self, don’t get it twisted!” Because one of the adversary’s most powerful tools is the tool of perversion. Perversion is the act or condition of being perverted (or twisted). Satan wants to pervert the mind, people and the purpose of God. He wants us to take what is good and twist it. Yesterday, I encouraged you to resist the twist of the devil. As I was preparing for today’s devotion God hit me with a rhythm change and sent me in another direction. He showed me that before you can resist the twist of the devil, you must submit to God. So that leads us to a question for today: Who’s king in your life?
The reason why this is so significant is because Paul expressed in Romans 5:21 “So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead...” The word “rule” is not one we should glaze over or ignore. This word (rule) distinguishes the difference between between lordship and kingship. Follow me as we go deeper. We understand that God is the Lord of all. The Bible says “The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein” (Psalms 24:1 KJV). So whether you accept it or not, you belong to God. You are owned by and belong to Him. He’s the creator of all and is Lord of all. But He cannot be King of everyone unless we accept Him as King. You see, that is the fundamental difference between lordship and kingship, it’s based on who rules. When God becomes King over our lives, that means we accept and receive His ruler ship in our lives.
Every day we pray as Jesus instructed, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.” When we pray that prayer, we’re saying “God, let Your kingdom be established in the earth as it already is in heaven! We want to see Your rulership because when You rule, things change!” When is the ruler over our lives the we can start to receive benefits of the Kingdom, but the question is: Who’s king in your life? Who are you allowing to dominate in your life?
The scripture we quoted from James is one that we often misquote (or get twisted) by saying “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” But James made it very clear by saying, “Humble yourselves before God.” For some of us we have been twisted so much! The devil has twisted our minds, our perspective and the way that we see things. And we just cannot see clearly and think that everyone is attacking us. But God is saying, “Listen I want to untwist you! I want to get you out of that but before I can do that, you have got to humble yourself! You have got to decide who’s going to be king in your life. Who’s rulership are you going to receive?” Paul made it known in Romans 6:16 “…that you become slaves to whatever you choose to obey.”
I want to encourage you today. Choose to obey God. Don’t allow your anxiety to rule you. Don’t allow your drama to rule you. Don’t allow your disappointments from 25 years ago to determine how you live today. Don’t allow that discouragement, that one failure, that one embarrassment to dictate the rest of your life. I encourage you today, to humble yourself before God and when we resist the twist of the devil, he will flee.
James went a little further and said, “Come close to God.” I believe that’s the answer for all of us. He said “Come close to God and He will come close to you.” On this Turn-it-around Tuesday, I believe things to turn around in your favor. For that twisted area in your life to become untwisted through repentance and humility and submission to God.
Prayer Focus: That we would receive the rulership of God’s kingdom in our lives.
I’m praying for you and with you,
