Resist the Twist
Don't Get it Twisted (Day 1) // Prayer365
“God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant. So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” - Romans 5:20-21 NLT
“Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?” Romans 6:1-2 NLT
This week our theme is “Don’t Get it Twisted.” It’s a continuation of yesterday’s message which is part 4 of our series called The Rhythms of Grace. This is an intentional effort on our part to not only be hearers of the word but also doers of the word. So throughout this week we will revisit elements of Sunday’s Message and identify ways we can apply it to our everyday living to produce growth in our lives.
This morning we read Romans 5:20 though 6:2. In this letter, Paul wisely addresses an area that could easily be mishandled if not careful. He lets them know that God’s grace is a response to the ever increasing sin in the world. And it’s as though he could anticipate a response from his readers and this led to him posing a question: “Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace?” And Paul responds emphatically, "Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?” My encouragement for you today is to resist the twist. Paul could sense that something could terribly go wrong if he didn’t speak up in that moment. What he was aware of is one of Satan’s devices that we are no longer ignorant of called perversion.
What the devil desires to do is to take what is good and twist it. At it’s core, that’s what perversion is - twisting something, twisting the interpretation, twisting the meaning, twisting the purpose - that’s what the devil desires to do. Understanding this, you can see that sin, at its core, is the perversion of God’s command. We saw this originally in the Garden of Eden where God instructed Adam and Eve to not eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Satan disrupted their lives with a question that created a twist in Eve’s understanding of God’s command (Read Genesis 3). There was a twisting.
So again, I encourage you to resist the twist but in order to resist it, we must acknowledge that it exists. Throughout this week, I want you to stay with me each day as we uncover the areas in our lives where things have been twisted. Perhaps it's in our perspective, or the way we see things. Perhaps it’s in our emotions, maybe it’s in our relationships. Somewhere along the way, something got twisted and we’re going to find out what it is. Then through the grace of God we will see it become untwisted. My prayer that we would be intentional in posturing ourselves for God to reveal the areas in our lives that have been twisted. Begin to thank God in advance for what He’s preparing to do in your life!
I'm praying for you and with you,
Pastor Enrique Brooks
