Study the Rhythm

The Rhythms of Grace (Day 2) // Prayer365

When a musician discovers a new rhythm, or is introduced to a new song, he doesn’t assume that he’s got it all figured out, instead he spends time studying the rhythm. In this time of studying it’s likely he/she will pull out sheet music or notes given by the music director and then listen to a recording for a while. But the musician doesn’t stop there, they do what’s arguably the most important step and that’s put in to practice what they’ve studied.

As believers and those who desire to know Him, like the musician, we must study His rhythm. The rhythm of God is found in His word, it is the sheet music of His heart. We know this to be the case because the scripture teaches us that the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. Therefore, the rhythm of the word is surely the expressed rhythm of God's heart.

There’s a man in the scripture that certainly captured God’s rhythm and I believe that we can learn from him. His name is David. He’s forever known as a man after God’s own heart, one that romanced God with his passion and authenticity. But how did David receive such a high honor? How did he become this man after God’s heart? The answer is through the word. David had an intimate relationship with God’s word. The entire 119th Psalm is an elaborate love song, an ode to the word of God. In 11th verse he says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” David understood that the key to rhythm of God was through the study of His word.

In your efforts to study the rhythm of God, here are three things I encourage you to do:

1. Study the Word. Make it a habit to read the word of God daily. We cannot live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4)
2. Listen to the Word. Be intentional about listening to the messages shared on Sundays and Wednesdays. This is instrumental to your growth as a believer as faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17).
3. Practice the Word. As it is with the musician, I believe that this is arguably the most important step. Studying and listening to the word are both very important, but it has no effect if not put into practice into our lives (James 1:22-23)

Paul instructed the young Timothy to study the word for the approval of God, not the applause of man (2 Timothy 2:15). In this life we have no need to impress the crowd, but only a desire to be approved by God. It’s only then that we begin to learn the rhythm of God. The Rhythms of Grace.

I'm praying for you and with you!
