Prayer 365 // Fruit in the Fundamentals (Day 4)

“As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him?” - Psalms 42:1-2 NLT
“Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews. But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”” - John 4:21-24 NLT
Our theme this week is Fruit in the Fundamentals. God has given us new life in Jesus Christ and with this new life, comes a new song and a new rhythm. It is our desire to be fruitful in this new life and this can be achieved through four Spiritual Fundamentals: Prayer, Study, Worship and Forgiveness.
Today I want to encourage you to worship daily. You see, if prayer is the air we breathe and the word is the food we eat then worship is the water we drink. Last night, in Bible Study, we discovered that God is ready and waiting on our prayers. Today, I want you to know that He’s looking for your worship.
One day I was working and I just felt overwhelmed. I couldn’t think clearly and I felt stressed out. I went out to the patio and began to worship. I started singing, creating my own medley as I looked out at the trees at the rest of God’s creation. By the time I was done, a peace had come over me that was unexplainable. I immediately realized that, like the psalmist, my spirit had become dehydrated and was thirsty for God’s presence.
In worship we honor God for who He is, it’s an expanded moment of adoration where we magnify God’s goodness as opposed to our circumstance. To worship God means to kiss the hand of God. This gesture is one of honor but based on the relationship it can be viewed as romantic. I believe that we romance God with our worship. This is why it’s stated that David is a man after God’s own heart because David was a worshipper.
As Jesus shared with the Samaritan woman, God is looking for true worshippers, those with a heart posture like David, those who will worship God in spirit and in truth. Pertaining to the spirit, I remind you that we are spiritual beings housed in physical bodies, therefore the spiritual you is the most real version of you. God, who is a Spirit, desires to connect with you spiritually. I warn you that this is not about simply saying the right things because you can say all the right things and still miss God. He has no desire to engage with empty lip service, but He desires to engage with the honest heart. So in worship we invite God to engage with our most authentic self, the part of us that is eternal, the part that is most vulnerable.
Not only does God desire that we worship Him in spirit but also in truth — I believe this to be in both honesty and consistency. Repentance keeps the heart free of sin and weights that hinder our worship; it keeps us honest and even righteous before the Father. But not only are we to worship in spirit but also in truth. Merriam-Webster defines true as loyal and consistent. Therefore the true worshipper is a consistent worshipper. This is why every believer should develop the habit of worshiping daily.
Like the body needs water, your spirit needs to worship the Father. Worship is a constant reminder of God’s limitless love, wisdom and power. In the place of worship, worry is displaced with unexplainable peace. It’s where heaviness is met with praise and disappointment is healed by hope. Worship daily - in the good and bad, when life is flowing and when faced with challenges. Proverbs 3:6 says to know God in every way, so I encourage you to know Him in worship — yes, in spirit, honesty and consistency. God has been waiting on your prayers and He’s looking for your worship. Worship daily.
Prayer focus: That you would engage God spiritually, honestly and consistently and experience fruit in your life.
