You Can See God
Prayer 365 // The Gift of Authenticity (Day 2)
More from this week:
Today's Scripture:
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” - Matthew 5:8 NIV
Today's Devotional:
The greatest gift you can give the world is being real. To be real means to be honest, authentic and genuine. So yes, the greatest gift you can give God, yourself, your family, your friends, your business, your community and all of the world is being the person that God designed you to be.
Someone may ask, what’s in it for me? Why would being “real” be a gift to myself. I can tell you that there are many benefits that come to mind such as the removal of unnecessary pressure, anxiety and pressure out of your life. Each of those reasons are huge but the one that stands above it all is that when you are real, you can see God – you can experience Him.
In his sermon on the mount, Jesus declared “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” When Jesus says pure, this means to be genuine, sincere; free from anything that is false. In other words, Jesus is saying that it’s the heart that’s real that can see God. Remember to be real is to be honest, authentic and genuine. When we are dishonest with ourselves and others, we hinder our ability to see God move in our lives. The reason why is because when we live in a lie, we live in an illusion thus separating us from the reality of who God is. And if we never experience God, we will never experience the fullness of life.
Taking another look at Matthew 5:8, it says “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” It’s important to note that God is a spirit so He cannot be physically seen. The word used for "see" in the greek means to experience. As believers, our goal should be to experience God. I want to experience HIM, not traditionalism, fantasy or comfortable doctrine. I want to experience His love, joy, peace, compassion, and grace. I want to experience His power to heal, deliver and set free! I want to experience Him!!! I want what’s real, not what looks good and sounds good. And I believe you do as well. But in order to experience what’s real, we must let go of what’s not.
Proverbs 4:23 lets us know that we must manage the condition of our hearts as it affects the flow of our lives therefore let’s do everything we can to keep this heart pure. Don’t allow things in that don’t belong, such as negative thoughts, bitterness, malice, jealousy, pride, or insecurity. Keep the stream of your heart pure so that you can experience the reality of God.
Based on what we now know, we can look at Matthew 5:8 a bit differently and say, "You’re blessed when you’re real because that’s when you will experience who God really is.”
Prayer Focus: That you would experience who God really is through a heat that's real.
