It Proves His Love
Prayer 365 // The Power of Discipline (Day 1)
More from this week:
Today's Scripture:
“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” - Hebrews 12:5-6 NIV
Today's Devotional:
This week’s theme is The Power of Discipline. Yesterday’s message was titled The Rhythm of Correction. We took a new look at the value of a disciplined life, more specifically a life disciplined by God and how it deepens our relationship with God. For this week of devotion and prayer, we will use elements of that message expound on it each day to experience the power of discipline.
The first thing I want you to know about the power of discipline is that it proves the love of the Father. Yes, God’s chastening proves His love.
Hebrews 12:5-6 starts out this way: “And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son?" This sets the stage that what we're about to read/hear is meant for our encouragement and not our destruction. It also establishes that the context of this encouragement as the writer is about to quote a passage from Proverbs 3 where a father (a king) is speaking to his son (a future king).
It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,” The greek word used here for discipline means training. A saying that we use and believe is that God doesn’t call the qualified but he qualifies the called. God will never call you and not prepare you. There’s nothing that you’ve been assigned to that God will not train you to do. But this training is only achieved through discipline.
The scripture goes on to say "and do not lose heart when he rebukes you.” A common misconception among people is mistaking correction for rejection. When God corrects us, it’s not because He no longer wants us. On the contrary, He corrects us because He desires to use us for His purpose.
The last part reads "because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” The main takeaway I want you to have today is that God corrects you because He loves you. The thought that God's correction means He doesn't want anything to do with you couldn't be further from the truth. He loves you and He has accepted you as His own. This reality, when accepted, has the power to reframe your perspective on life's challenges.
God has a purpose for your life and this is why He takes the time to guide you, redirect you and correct you. When you recognize this truth (your having purpose), you will see that you cannot afford to waste time or effort and the need for discipline in your life. I believe that if you would embrace the discipline of the Lord in your life, you will experience life transformation. Discipline will transform your finances, your marriage, your home, your career, and most of all your relationship with God. Receive His discipline and receive the power it will release in your life.
I'm praying for you and with you,
