Value God's Word

Prayer 365 // Finding the Flow (Day 2)

More From This Week:

Today's Scripture:

“When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.” So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”” - ‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭16:6-12‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Today's Devotional:

Our goal is to discover what God has approved. Because whatever God has approved, He has anointed and whatever He has anointed will flow. So instead of being wasteful in our efforts, we desire only the things, plans, projects and strategies that have been approved and anointed by God so that we might experience the flow of His grace. Therefore, in all that we do, we desire to find the flow. Take a moment and say aloud, “It’s my desire to find the flow.”

Samuel displayed a unique ability to find the flow of God. Yesterday we began looking at his life to identify what it was about Samuel that gave him this ability to discover where the anointing of God was free to flow. The first thing we observed was that Samuel deeply valued the presence of God because all of his success was attributed to God being present with him. Today I want to show you the second quality of Samuel that gives him the ability to find the flow of God and that is his value for God’s word. This is our focus for today, to value God’s word.

In order to understand why Samuel values the word of God, we must look again at his beginnings. We understand that God spoke to Samuel as a child, but the significance of this moment is that Samuel heard from God during a time where the word of God was precious, it was rare to hear from Him. Yet God decided to speak to him – this boy who couldn’t even recognize His voice. This was something that shouldn’t be taken lightly and Samuel understood this.

Today, I want to share three reasons why we should value God’s word:

  1. It’s Valuable. When God spoke to Samuel as a child, His word was not only precious in the sense of its rarity, but it is precious in the sense of its value. God’s word is truly precious. David declared that God’s word is more precious than gold and sweeter than honey from the honeycomb (Psalm 19:9-10). God’s word must never be looked upon casually but with great value.
  2. It’s Eternal. God is eternal and He speaks from eternity, therefore His word is eternal. Jesus, the Word, himself declared that “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Matthew 24:35).
  3. It’s Effective. Through the prophet Isaiah, God testified of himself that his word will not return empty but will accomplish what he desires and achieve the purpose for which He sent it (Isaiah 55:11). Samuel witnessed the effectiveness of God's word first hand from his own conception in a barren womb thorough the fulfillment of the rest of his life.

Samuel understood that God’s word was effective, this is why he valued it. When we look at 1 Samuel 16 and we see Samuel waiting for the king to walk through the door so he could anoint him. Although he had seen what was attractive in Eliab – what looked like a king, Samuel did not move until God’s word confirmed His choice.

Friends, in order for us to find the flow, we must value God’s word. We cannot move on what looks good or sounds right, instead we must depend on God’s word. We must look for His approval, confirmation and direction in His word. If you want to find the flow, we must value the word of God.

Prayer Focus: that you would engage with God’s word in a deeper way. Not that you would just read it, but that you would find a deep value for it. Because when you value God’s word, there will be a transformation in your life! Yes, a turnaround in your life! Instead of blockages and hinderances, you will experience the flow because you value God’s word.

I’m praying with you and for you,
