The Gift Exchange
Focus Scripture
"When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh." — Matthew 2:9-11 NKJV
Introduction
One key tradition that takes place during the celebration of Christmas is the exchanging of gifts. People purchase gifts for those they love, wrap them nicely and present them to one another on Christmas day. This is a tradition that began shortly after the birth of Jesus when his family was visited by three wise men who traveled from the east. When they stepped into the presence of the King, they opened their treasures and presented gifts to Him. Among those gifts was gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This was a gift exchange. A majestic moment, flowing in the rhythm of generosity—a song initiated by a generous Father who gave His only Son for the salvation of all people. This moment serves as an example of how we too can exchange gifts with God himself. This week, we will learn how to engage in The Gift Exchange.
